Victorian

After the Georges came Queen Victoria (1837-1901) and her son Edward VII (1901-10).

Both Victorian and Edwardian styles make up a large portion of the property currently available on today’s market.

Victorian property was dominated by the bay window; it let a lot of light into the front room (as well as giving a good view of the neighbourhood!) In this period, ceilings become very elaborate with such things as central ceiling roses and moulded cornice work.

The other key feature of this style was the fireplace. It consisted of two parts; the manufactured cast-iron grate and a chimney piece made from marble, slate or wood, (depending on the wealth of the owner).
