Review of the area

Glasgow is the largest city in Scotland and the most populous unitary authority area. The city lies on the River Clyde. Glasgow boasts a population of over 600,000 residents.

Glasgow was once filled with medieval architecture, but very little medieval architecture remains with the exception of the 14th century Provand’s Lordship and the Glasgow Cathedral. Most of the city’s current architecture dates back to the 19th century where Victorian designs ruled the day.

Traditionally, Glasgow’s wealth came from industries such as steel making, the ship yards, marine engineering, and heavy industry. These industries have since been replaced by more modern high-tech positions. Many residents commute to neighbouring cities for work. Some of the buildings have been restored and are kept in beautiful condition in order to preserve Glasgow’s past heritage, but many of the buildings were destroyed in order to build more modern high-rise buildings and flats.

These high-rise flats dot the landscape even though many have been demolished to curtail criminal elements that were often attracted to them. Alongside the city’s past architectural designs are the city’s newest developments such as the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre, and the Glasgow Science Centre to name a few.

Glasgow offers many opportunities to experience art and entertainment. The city offers opera, ballet, and The National Theatre of Scotland. Other institutions of cultural interest include the Scottish National Orchestra, and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra.

When not at the theatre or museums, residents like to participate and enjoy sporting events such as football. Glasgow has three large sports stadiums and three professional football clubs. The city also has a professional rugby union and takes pride in various other sports such as badminton, basketball and American football.

Transportation in Glasgow includes methods such as trains, subways, ferries, and buses. Of course, cars are also an option. The city also provides access to two International airports; Glasgow International Airport, Glasgow Prestwick International Airport. There is also a smaller airfield available at Cumbernauld.

It is easy to see how Glasgow was named the UK’s City of Architecture and Design in 1999.
