Review of the area

Salford is a city located in Greater Manchester. The city is divided by the River Orwell and boasts a population of approximately 70,000 people.

Traditionally, the town’s main industries were cloth, silk, and maritime businesses. In recent years, much of the town’s main industry has shifted to tourism and retail. Government efforts to refurbish the town are making positive changes in improving the town’s atmosphere, economy, and resident’s quality of life.

Salford provides easy access to Manchester via the Metrolink tram system. There are nine main railway stations and a bus service. Transportation in and around Salford shouldn’t be problematic.

There are several shopping centres located within Salford including the Salford Shopping City, and smaller shopping centres located at Eccles, Swinton, Walkden, and several other small shopping districts scattered throughout the city.

Salford provides an opportunity for higher education via the University of Salford. The area immediately surrounding the university has fallen somewhat into disrepair though. The University is one of three universities located in Greater Manchester.

Salford boasts a diverse group of residents with portions of the city being impoverished while other areas are quite wealthy. Salford Quays is a more affluent area located within the city. There are also several suburban areas scattered within the city that are quite affluent areas as well.

The city has a poor reputation as being one of the worst places in the UK to live. This opinion has been based mostly on the city’s high levels of crime, unemployment, and lack of education.

The city is not all lost however. It is home to several major corporations including IBM, Citifinancial, McDonalds, and BUPA. Lately the city has seen major growth in the Salford Quays area.

I have been there on holiday and my family live in the area, it is also close to parks, shops, schools, shopping centres and social entertainment. I would give it 10 out of 10.
