Review of the area

The city of Liverpool is located in North West England. The city is located on the eastern side of the Mersey Estuary. Liverpool is England’s fifth most populous city with approximately 450,000 residents.

Liverpool is built upon a series of hills. The city’s urban area provides easy access to Bootle and Crosby to the north and Huyton and Prescot to the east. Wallsey and Birkenhead lie across the River Mersey to the west.

Liverpool became the centre of pop culture in the 1960’s as popular bands such as the Beatles emerged. A series of special events have been planned for years and is expected to hit an all time cultural high in the year 2008. Liverpool plans on being named the Europian Capitol of Culture in the year 2008, this was announced in 2003.

The city of Liverpool is immersed in culture from delivering many pop artists to the forefront of the music industry, to several famous poets, to the performing arts. The city is home to many theatres and Liverpool boasts more art galleries and museums than any other city except for London.

Football is by far Liverpool’s most popular sport. Other sports associated with Liverpool include cricket and horseracing. Sports such as boxing, tennis, gymnastics and karate also play an important role in the city’s sports arenas.

Liverpool consists of a variety of architectural wonders including more Georgian houses than even the city of Bath. The creations of many well-known architects can be seen throughout the city. Some of the most notable and well-recognized buildings include the Royal Liver Building, the Cunard Building, and the Port of Liverpool Building.

Liverpool is a religiously diverse city with a variety of churches including two Christian Cathedrals, a Greek Orthodox Church, two synagogues, and a mosque. The many travelers and sailors that have passed through Liverpool have clearly left a religious imprint on the city.

Liverpool attracts many students as well thanks to its three universities. The city is home to the University of Liverpool, Liverpool Hope University, and the Liverpool john Moores University. There are also several private and religious schools that call the city home.

Travel in Liverpool is made easier thanks to the Mersey Railway Tunnel, and the two road tunnels. The Mersey Ferry also provides a vital link to the Wirral. Liverpool also boasts the Port of Liverpool and the Liverpool John Lennon Airport. Railways and bus service are always a good choice of transportation around the city as well.

Liverpool’s economy has been boosted by an ever growing service sector. Including call centres and developments in the computer game industry. Tourism is an important factor in the Liverpool economy too and the city should continue to see growth in this area.

The city is well-known for its musical heritage.
