Review of the area

Watford is a town and district in Hertfordshire, United Kingdom, situated 21 miles northwest of London and is close to strategic roads; the M25 motorway that rings London and the M1 motorway that connects London to the Midlands and northern England.

The High Street, (reputed to be one of the longest in the UK) running through the town centre, is the main focus of activity at night. (By activity, this means high volumes of drunken people and generally alcohol induced loutishness on Friday and Saturday nights.)

This part of town is sometimes referred to as the Café Quarter, and has a high concentration of the towns bars, clubs and restaurants. Stick with the lower end of the High Street and you should be fine.

At the lower end of the High Street is the Harlequin Shopping Centre, a large purpose-built indoor mall with over 100 shops, restaurants and cafes. It’s actually quite nice, so long as you avoid the after school crush of teenagers.

Fortunately, Watford has some redeeming features of which Cassiobury Park is one.

Cassiobury Park consists of 190 acres of open space and parkland. In July 2007, the park won a Green Flag Award which recognizes the best green spaces in the country. It has a children’s play area which includes a paddling pool, play equipment, mini train track for children’s rides, bouncy castle, ice cream van and a kiosk where you can buy food and drinks. The Grand Union Canal passes through the park. It is great in summer but comes into its own in autumn when its fabulous colours are on show.

Leavesden Aerodrome on the outskirts of Watford was home to the Rolls Royce or De Havilland factory as it was known in WW2. The world famous Mosquito Fighter Bomber and the Halifax bomber were manufactured here during World War II. The aerodrome was converted into Leavesden Film Studios, which was famously the home of the Harry Potter films. Other films made at Leavesden studios include Goldeneye, Star Wars Episode 1 The Phantom Menace, and Sleepy Hollow.

Watford is home to professional football team Watford F.C., who reached the FA Cup Final in 1984 (as well as three other semi-finals), also finishing as league runners-up in 1983. Singer-songwriter Sir Elton John is a keen, long-term supporter of Watford F.C. and a former club chairman.

Since 1997 the club has shared its ground, Vicarage Road, with Guinness Premiership Rugby team Saracens who are perennial under achievers (a bit like Watford FC really). Watford FC supporters have a near pathological hatred of Luton and vice versa so it’s best to avoid talking football with people from either location.

Watford is also an important transportation link.

Watford Junction station is on the West Coast Main Line which connects London (terminus at Euston) to the Midlands, north-west England and Scotland. Some long-distance trains on this route serve Watford Junction, where there are also frequent suburban and regional trains.

London Underground serves Watford Metropolitan Line station at the outer north-western boundary of the system. The Metropolitan Line branch is due to be diverted to Watford Junction via the disused Croxley Green branch.

Regular and frequent bus and coach services connect Watford Junction station to Heathrow Airport and Luton Airport, direct train services run from Watford Junction Station to Gatwick and Birmingham International Airport.

(Reviewer Martin Barratt lived in Watford for 2 years. He mostly enjoyed it apart from when it rained; this made Watford very dull and grey. Still, its way better than Luton which frankly, should be avoided at all costs.)
