Review of the area

Clifton is one of the oldest and most affluent areas of Bristol, whose wealth was originally derived from tobacco and the slave trade.

Clifton (and Bristol) is most famous for the legendary Clifton Suspension Bridge, which was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel (who also built the SS Great Britain, the first iron clad steamship in the world).

The Clifton Suspension Bridge, which was completed in 1864 spans the beautiful Avon Gorge, is the symbol of the city of Bristol. For almost 150 years this Grade I listed structure has attracted visitors from all over the world and despite its age still copes with 11-12,000 motor vehicles crossing it every day.

Clifton is also famous for its Georgian buildings. Although some were detached or semi-detached properties, the bulk were built as terraces, many with three or more floors. These houses are in great demand today and many have been converted into apartments.

Georgian architecture is most evident in the terraces that are prominent in Clifton, such as West Mall, Caledonia Place, and Cornwallis Crescent. Most famous of all is the majestic Royal York Crescent, visible from the Avon Gorge below and looking across the Bristol docklands.

The prices of property in Clifton reflect the history and affluence of the area with large numbers of properties costing at least £500,000. Sion Hill which faces the Suspension Bridge, is arguably one of the most expensive streets to live in the United Kingdom (but it does have an amazing view!)

Clifton is also comprised of various sub-districts including Whiteladies Road, a shopping district located to the east of Clifton (and a popular haunt for the myriads of students due to its proliferation of bars and pubs) and Clifton Village, a smaller and distinctly more upmarket district to the west of Clifton (mainly due to its designer shops, renowned restaurants and vast quantities of 4x4s).

Clifton is home to many buildings of the University of Bristol (such as Goldney Hall, Victoria Rooms and the impressive Wills Memorial Building). It is also home to Christchurch Church (the spire of which is the tallest point in Bristol), and Clifton College and Clifton High School for Girls (both exclusive and expensive private schools).

Another landmark is the Bristol Zoo which opened in 1836, making it the second oldest Zoo in Britain.

Clifton is also home to BBC Bristol (home of the Natural History Unit and famous for the TV series Planet Earth and The Blue Planet).

Berkeley Square which was built around 1790 is a fine example of Georgian architecture and famous for being the set for the BBC TV series the House of Elliott.

The Clifton Lido public pool was built in 1850 but closed to the public in 1990, although it is set to re-open again in 2008.

Travel in Clifton is made easier by the Clifton Down Railway Station located on Whiteladies Road. The station provides service for the Severn Beach railway line. Clifton is also served by buses that run down through Whiteladies Road and also Clifton Village. A number of services link with Temple Meads, Bristol’s main railway station.

Houses for sale in Clifton includes terraced homes, apartments and flats.

(Reviewer Martin Barratt lived in Clifton for 5 years, 3 of which were as a student. He is sorry for any tomfoolery that may have ocurred during his time there. He would also like to inform the local residents that there is, amazingly, life outside of Clifton Village.)
