The following aggregated statistics and area review are provided for general information purposes only

Review of the area

Horfield is a suburb of the city of Bristol, in southwest England. It lies on Bristols northern edge, its border with Filton marking part of the boundary between Bristol and South Gloucestershire. Bishopston lies directly to the south and Monks Park and Golden Hill are to the west. Lockleaze and Ashley Down are on the eastern side. The Gloucester Road (A38) runs north/south through Horfield.

The name Horfield is Anglo-Saxon in origin, meaning filthy open land (Old English horu and feld). Historically, the area had a reputation as a lawless place because Horfield Wood was the haunt of thieves and vagrants. However, it is much safer these days.

The main route through Bishopston and then Horfield is the Gloucester Road. It is well known for its pubs and restaurants, and was cited on a BBC Radio 4 phone-in as an example of a high street that still retained its character and a high proportion of independently-owned small shops. This, and the range of fairly traded and local goods available, has made it popular with ecologically-minded shoppers.

Horfield is home to nice curry houses like The Ganges and Raj Pavilions, the Tinto Lounge (great food, drink and unpretentious atmosphere) and The Fryer (good fish and chips).

In Horfield is The Wellington; the CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) Bristol & District joint winner of Pub of the Year for 2005. It is held in high regard by the locals, due to serving Bath Ales and having both friendly staff and a pleasant atmosphere.

Also in Horfield on the Gloucester Road is The Inn on the Green which won the 2006 Pub of the Year. They serve Sharps Beer from Cornwall which is quite possibly the best ale money can buy. As you can see Horfield is very popular with beer lovers!

Pubs worth avoiding in Horfield are the Old Fox (bikers pub and a bit scary), the John Cabot (popular with football supporters and riot police), the Anchor (souless and entirely lacking in character) and the Gloucester Arms (words fail me...).

Horfield is home to the Memorial Stadium: a sports stadium built in 1921 for Bristol Rugby Club in memory of the rugby union players of the city who died in World War I, and rededicated to commemorate the dead of World War II. In 1996, the ground also became home to Bristol Rovers Football Club who now own it. Rovers ground shar
