Review of South

The South of England is a large region consisting of West Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Surrey.

The major urban areas of the region include Portsmouth, Southampton, Bournemouth and Reading. The region boasts some wonderful coastline and beaches including Bournemouth, Poole and the Isle of Wight. Popular from Victorian times as a holiday resort, the Isle of Wight is known for its natural beauty and as home to the Royal Yacht Squadron at Cowes, a town that hosts a world famous annual regatta.

It also is home to the famous ports of Southampton and Portsmouth. In addition, the area is home to several wooded areas including Bracknell Forest and the New Forest in Hampshire. The New Forest is an area that includes the largest remaining tracts of unenclosed pasture land, heathland and old-growth forest in the South of England. The South of England is a very prosperous area with many high technology companies along the M4 motorway corridor. Microsoft and Oracle both have their UK headquarters next door to each in Reading, as does the Yell Group. Allianz Cornhill Insurance has its UK headquarters in Guildford. George Wimpey and RAF Air Command are both in High Wycombe in Buckinghamshire.

B&Q is based in Chandlers Ford. Farnborough has many aerospace companies including BAE Systems and is home to the world renowned Farnborough Airshow.

The Ordnance Survey and a Ford manufacturing plant are based in Southampton, and Skandia Insurance also has its UK base there. Oxford University Press is (of course) in Oxford. The AA Headquarters is in Basingstoke. Vodafone is based in Newbury, Berkshire. Virgin Media is based in Hook, Hampshire, and Virgin Atlantic in Crawley, Surrey. The McLaren Formula 1 and motor company is based in Woking.

Aldershot has a large military garrison and is known as the Home of the British Army. Sandhurst Royal Military Academy (where the officers of the British Army are trained) is in Bracknell Forest.
